iPhone 5 and Lack of NFC

Derrick Ko takes on Apple's new iPhone. I disagree with larger screens being called less usable and I see its release is a concession to that point. I was disappointed to see no NFC capabilities, but Ko correctly points out that there isn't a desire for it:

While it could be Apple’s prerogative as a market leader to push for its adoption, the market may not be ripe for NFC just yet. The mobile payments space is still sorting itself out, and the success of platforms like Square would make NFC redundant.

What he doesn't point out is Apple's desire to spearhead technology is driven by their ability to look smart. Apple is late to this game and it would benefit its competition to make NFC viable. NFC is an incredible technology and it's pathetic that there isn't a better adoption rate.
